The importance of advisors and mentors in the career of a scientist can not be overestimated. The bulk of advanced scientific education takes place in the laboratory or in research projects that involve a close apprentice-like relationship between the senior and junior researchers. However, the role of the larger educational environment and social network of scientists is also important to consider. This session focuses on ethical issues involved in mentoring.

Assigned Readings:

  • Article: Truth or Consequences. (PDF) (From Science, Sept. 1, 2006; pp. 222-226) Article regarding graduate students who reported their advisor's misconduct and the resulting fall out. For this session, forget about the misconduct aspect and focus on mentor-mentee obligations involved. This case will be briefly discussed in the presentation. See additional questions for the reading (PDF).
