The ESL Writing Initiative exists to provide accessible information to faculty members and instructors about how to teach, assign, and respond to the writing of students of English as a second language ("ESL students") across the U. In addition to this website, we offer consultations/workshops on writing for instructors across the curriculum.
More and more ESL students are enrolling in courses across the curriculum. Writing assignments in those courses can be challenging for ESL students, because they may understand expectations differently than their native-English-speaking peers. The assignments can also be challenging for instructors who are unfamiliar with the complexities of English language learning.
