Final paper                                                                 Due: 3:30 PM APRIL 30 in OSH 341

 

Instructions:

(1) You may not write on SearleÕs Chinese Room Argument.

(2) Feel free to write on a topic of your own choosing (respecting rule (1)).

(3) Papers should be 5-7 pages long, double-spaced, 12 pt font, 1-1.5 inch margins.

(4) Papers should be an argument Ð a set of paragraphs designed to establish an overarching conclusion.

(5) Your paper should focus on establishing your conclusion.  The most common error students make is a failure to focus.

 

 

Sample topic set:

 

Classical cognitive science has been a theoretical target for most of the semester.  Consider this research paradigm, and assess the challenge posed to it by one of the following:

a.  connectionism

b.  dynamical systems theory

c.  ÔextendedÕ or ÔsituatedÕ cognition

d.  artificial life

 

Focus on explaining what particular assumptions of classical cognitive science are called into question.  Also assess whether you think the new paradigm is a genuine alternative to the classical paradigm, and how a classicist might respond.
