Fall 2005 Bernard Williams was one of the most subtle, thoughtful and influential philosophers of the twentieth century, and shortly before his death, Jonathan Lear called him "the philosopher among us." Now is a good time to consider and assess his work as a whole. We will examine his discussions of moral relativism, of internalism (the idea that reasons for action bottom out in one's motivations), of integrity-based objections to utilitarianism and Kantian moral theory, and of the science/ethics distinction, as well as further topics.
