Fall 2003 What are objects, and why are there so many of them? Is it philosophically important that so many objects are spatial? Why do they persist over time? Why do people persist over time? Is the fact that many things could have been different than they actually are analogous to persistence over time? (In the jargon: is being modally extended analogous to being temporally extended?) Are there more basic types of objects (or facts) on which less basic types of objects (or facts) supervene? What makes the different parts or aspects of an object belong to that object -- and what makes different psychological states belong to a single person? Undergraduates may take this class with the permission of the instructor.
